Russian Military Target And Murder American Journalist

While reporting the crisis in Ukraine, critically regarded American journalist and filmmaker Brent Renaud was shot and murdered by the Russian military in a city outside of Kyiv on Sunday.

The late journalist, a former contributor to The New York Times, visited the war-torn region of Ukraine. After passing through a checkpoint, Renaud was driving a car with another reporter when Russian soldiers opened fire on the journalists, killing Renaud.

Renaud is the first American journalist murdered while on assignment in Ukraine by Russian forces.

Renaud’s assignment, according to NYT Deputy Managing Editor Cliff Levy, was commissioned by an anonymous American media, not the New York Times.

According to the Pulitzer Center, Renaud received numerous prizes and nominations for his films, which he co-directed with his brother and received widespread critical praise.

Killing members of the press during a military confrontation is considered a violation of international law and a war crime.
